Reading and writing are based on individual student needs and taught in large and small group settings. Phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling and word attack are foundational to reading instruction. Focused practice includes individualized practice, dynamic classroom read alouds, independent reading and exposure to a rich variety of available texts. All students are encouraged to read a variety of narratives for their personal enjoyment. From the earliest ages, students begin the process of writing and conferencing about their writing. Reading and writing instruction is directly connected to grade-level units so that reading and writing connections are made to other areas of study at all grade levels. For example, primary grade students concentrate on the basic mechanics of reading and writing, middle school students move to writing paragraphs and reading comprehension, and upper grade students write a research paper and Christian reflection document.
