God created us to worship Him. One way we can do that is how we use our bodies and how we work with others.
We take student development seriously at Sheldon Christian. We want students to understand that they are important and valued because of who they are, not what they can do. We seek to reflect this idea through our athletic program and our athletic policy.
Many opportunities for physical fitness are available at Sheldon Christian, including:
- Cross Country (girls/boys)
- Volleyball (girls)
- Basketball (girls/boys)
- Soccer (girls/boys - sometimes co-ed)
- Track (girls/boys)
Our Athletics Philosophy
Interscholastic athletics can be of value as a supportive element to the total education process. This process concerns the total person; growth as an individual - spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially.
Interscholastic athletics should provide:
- A learning experience (ex. basic skills and game strategies)
- A positive base for Christian development
- An understanding of competition, emphasizing sportsmanship, and teamwork.
The privilege of participating in these programs is extended to all 6th through 8th grade students, provided they are willing to assume certain responsibilities. A student’s greatest responsibility is to be a credit to the school, his/her family and the community, and in so doing represent Christ in a worthy manner.
Coaching Standards
Our coach’s first concern must be the best interests of the children (God’s image bearers). This implies a wholistic approach to coaching – team members are spiritual beings with spiritual needs. Children must learn that everything must be done to glorify God. They are His disciples today, in all things including interscholastic sports. They must be enabled to grow in their relationship to self, neighbor, and God. Practice and team meeting times are the best places to evaluate, discuss, and establish team and even personal goals.
